Fund flow and layering

Did the money reach this account through a chain of transfers shortly before it took a position?

In plain English

Money reached this account through a chain of transfers shortly before it took a position. Layered funding can be used to obscure where money came from.

What the record supports

  • Multi-hop transfer chains arriving at a trading account.
  • The interval between funding and the position being taken.
  • The shape of the chain: how many hops, how quickly, how much.

Why this indicator is qualified

  • Where the money originally came from, once it passes off the record we observe or through a service that pools funds.
  • Whether layering was the purpose. Ordinary transfers between an exchange, a wallet and a platform can produce the same shape.
  • Transfers on any chain we are not observing, which is why this indicator is marked partly observable rather than observable.

Obligation

Why it matters.

Layering, moving funds through intermediate steps to obscure their origin, is one of the classic stages of laundering. Where it appears immediately before a large position, the sequence itself is the reason to look.

We describe what was detected and which duty it engages. Whether any obligation has been breached is a judgement for the operator's compliance and legal function, not for an instrument.
